Today it would be hard to find a person that wouldn’t recognize the sound of metal music.

A little bit of history

Metal has its roots in blues and rock”n”roll of the 50s and 60s. This is where the first bands to play this new style of music, such as Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix Experience, started off. Later, during the 70s and 80s, the sound of metal shifted toward a much darker one, with an increasingly aggressive style of playing and even greater over-amplification.

The sound of metal

The term “metal” (or “heavy metal”) was initially coined in the 60s, when a magazine compared the groundbreaking guitar performances of Jimi Hendrix to the sound of heavy metal being cut. Indeed, it often sounds just like that. There are several traits that characterize metal music:

  • distorted and over-amplified guitar parts
  • prominent bass and drums
  • often extensive and elaborate guitar solos that literally “scream” at you
  • dramatic vocals

Generally, metal music is characterized by extremes: everything from the sound itself to the visual appearance of the musicians, record covers and posters is excessively distorted, with a dark undertone and, in most cases, a twist of wickedness.
