Today, techno music is primarily associated with the club scene. It is usually played loudly and is often danced to. One can say that it is an audible symbol of modernity, a cultural icon of the new era.
The coming of techno
Although technically one can consider several electronic music pioneers, such as Jean-Michelle Jarre or even Pink Floyd, to be the forerunners and inspiration behind techno music, it is mainly a 90s phenomenon.
With strong repetitive beats and refined electronic melodies of the 70s disco music as its initial point of departure, the distinct sound of techno first emerged in the acid house scene of Chicago and Detroit in mid-80s. It was later refined in the UK, where a vibrant culture of raves blossomed in late 80s and early 90s. Other countries, such as Germany, Sweden, and even Russia, have created their own blends of techno.
How to spot a techno track
Being a genre of electronic dance music, there are several distinct features that set techno music apart from other similar and often closely related styles:
- a loud and powerful beat
- 4/4 beat with the bass drum accentuating the last quarter
- relatively high tempo, typically between 120 and 150 bpm (beats per minute)
- repetitive nature of melodic lines
- incorporation into lengthy mixes and DJ sets
From the purely technical standpoint there are otherwise few details that differentiate techno from other types of electronic music, such as the use of synthesizers and drum machines.
