December 3, 2022When was music born? No one knows, but everyone knows that its appearance can be compared to reinventing the wheel. Perhaps, when you listen to the sound of the surf, the rustling of the leaves or birds singing, then you understand that music is all around us. All of our lives, wherever we go consists of music: the harmony or the dissonant sounds, the thunder or the whispers, gray and dull or bright and poisonous colors. All these aspects can be expressed in the royalty free classical music, because this genre is the most diverse and can convey to the listeners all the aspects and emotions. But how is this possible? Perhaps because this genre is alive and has prospered for more than five hundred years, it will always have ardent fans. Starting from the time, when Bach and Handel lived, passing through the Viennese classicism in the works of Haydn and Mozart, encompassing the legendary Russian and Soviet royalty free classical music. We can say with certainty that all these works have stood the test of time. Despite the fact that all the radio stations broadcast modern hits, we can say that these hits won’t have a long lifetime. Easy come, easy go, like trivial fashion. The works of composers such as Tchaikovsky, Rimsky – Korsakov, Glinka, Borodin, Mussorgsky are the basis and inspiration for Hollywood composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In many modern American and European films you can hear echoes of Russian music and many composers have openly admitted in interviews that they are fans of some of the great Russian composers of the nineteenth century. Works by Prokofiev, Kabalevsky, Shostakovich or Hachyaturyan were considered progressive and avant-garde music and now serve as an example for young composers who want to climb to the top. The expressive possibilities of these new composers are enormous and they can afford to experiment. Because having at their disposal a large symphony orchestra you may do almost everything from passionate or careless whisper to a powerful tornado and explosions that are stunning! Probably most people love to go to the theater or to the cinema or to the philharmonic. So, when you have free time, you can always relax and touch beautiful things. The sound has always been the source of a variety of emotions when it comes to royalty free classical music. And it’s wonderful, delicious and beautiful. You do not have to go the theater to hear all this. It is enough to turn on the TV set or computer and go online. There you can find anything you want! Many young people prefer trendy tracks, and they turn on the sound as loudly as possible for everyone to hear what they like. But there are many people who prefer a calmer and milder style of music. Both options are good! When you listen, you can often imagine yourself in the role of the conductor of an orchestra. You stand in front of the musicians, and they sit in front of you with their musical instruments and understand your every gesture. If you are the conductor, it will depend on you how this masterpiece will be played! It is so wonderful. Here, the violinists begin to lead the main theme so gently, and their theme is repeated softly by the woodwind section, like an echo. Then suddenly here comes the climax of the piece by the brass section. Tuba, trombones, french horns and trumpets begin a conversation with the drums and timpani. It is the culmination and finale at the same time, as the curtain falls, or when the main character loses his beloved. And the listener at the philharmonic or the audience in the cinema, begin to worry about the fate of the characters, experiencing their problems and challenges, as their own. [...] Read more...
November 6, 2022Hundreds of musicals have been made over time, but just a selected few were memorable and genius enough to have made it through history and be consider amongst the best because not all musicals have the same impact. For a musical to succeed there is a lot of things that come into consideration, the story has to be engaging and the scenery and choreography have to be appealing as well but of course a very important factor is the music. Some Broadway shows have been so popular that they were adapted into films such as “Bring It On” the musical, others have been streamed and then immortalized into DVD’s such “She Loves Me” which was actually the first musical to get live streamed. There are a few lucky ones that have been running for decades or are constantly being revived because the audience wants to keep seeing them, thankfully musical theater is an art that is still alive and well and keeps bringing us a lot of culture and wonderful stories to theaters and the big screen. Here we will talk about some of the most memorable and popular musicals but also those who had high expectations but ended up living a short life, we will also mention some popular high school plays and great musical movies. West Side Story Starting off with a classic musical, West Side Story was in Rolling Stone’s “10 Best Musicals of All Time” 2019 and this revolutionary work of art served as much more than just entertainment. In this story a lot of traditions are represented when it comes to Latin American and American cultures, this musical was the first to show a rougher kind of story as opposed to the usual “light” themed musicals. Using street slangs and urban settings it really changed the common storyline for musicals and the music composed by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim is simply amazing. Wicked Of course in our list of popular Broadway shows the classic musical “Wicked” could not be missed. This is the 5th longest-running musical currently playing on the West End and also one of the top musicals in London counting with its own Wicked Broadway Musical DVD. This compelling story talks about two sorcery student of Oz who start off as friends in school but eventually end up as “Glinda the Good” and the “Wicked Witch of the West”. It takes the audience into another side of the world of Oz and provides stunning sets, costumes, and of course hauntingly beautiful music, as an extremely popular choice by audiences it is actually one of the highest grossing musicals of all time. The Phantom of the Opera This is one of the most iconic musicals of all time, with the very lyrical and almost operatic vocals and the dark but classic setting of the staging its one of the highest rated Broadway shows. The Phantom of the Opera storyline is about a young singer that becomes the obsession of a man only known as “The Phantom”, although he lives in the sewers underneath Paris Opera House he is a musical genius so she is tutored by him and eventually becomes the venue’s leading singer but things get complicated as she falls in love with another man. Also if you are into movies more than plays this actually occupies the #47th spot in Rotten Tomatoes list of “top 100 best musical movies”, the cast its really good and it has the perfect combination between rock & roll and horror. Les Miserables Probably one of the most popular Broadway plays, this musical is entirely sang and it has been adapted to film more than once. The heartbreaking story talks about Jean Valjean, a prisoner that is finally released after 19 years all because he stole a piece of bread for his starving nephew. Eventually he is giving a second chance to start over and decides to start a new honest life. Some of the greatest music and most heartbreaking lyrics are in this play, and not for nothing Les Mis is the 2nd longest-running musical in the world. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street This is another great musical that has been adapted into film by Tim Burton, although it opened on Broadway 1979 just 2 years ago it was one of the top 10 musicals of 2017 according to TIME. It tells a horrifying story about a barber that was incarcerated for a crime he didn’t commit and later returns to London under a new identity, he opens a barber shop and starts a series of assassinations against anyone that did him wrong. The musical work for this play has been probably one of the material from Sondheim submerging the audience into the psychologically demented mind of the murderer, the film reviews from the critics seemed be very positive and it won several awards. The Lion King The Lion King was born as an adaptation from the animated Disney film of the same name, although it didn’t actually premiered on Broadway it later became the highest grossing Broadway production of all time. It is definitely one of the top as it is widely loved by audiences all around the globe and still one of the most popular plays on Broadway now, providing breath-taking scenery, music and performances the cast of the West End has actually performed in the presence of the British Royal Family. There are some plays worth mentioning that although the thematic was creative and the music was good, did not had a very long life in Broadway. Into the Woods Into the Woods, another Broadway show that had the great Stephen Sondheim as the composer, this musical intertwines the different stories of several fairy tales including Cinderella, Rapunzel and the Little Red Riding Hood all tied by the main character’s story, a baker, his wife and a witch. It was premiered on Broadway 1987 and has been produced or brought back several times in different places such as West End in London, it should also be on your movie musicals list since on 2014 Disney released the film adaptation with Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Emily Blunt and other amazing actors. Next to Normal Next to Normal is a good modern musical written by Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt and premiered in 2008, although it belongs to the category of not well known musicals because of the short life it had (ending in 2011) this piece was awarded with very important prizes such as several Tony Awards and even a Pulitzer where the board called it’s a powerful rock musical that grapples with mental illness in a suburban family and expands the scope of subject matter for musicals. The thematic talks about very real and up to date issues such as marriage problems and mental illnesses, although is not playing on Broadway anymore there is a Next to Normal dvd and cd available to watch and listen to which is highly recommendable since one of the Tony’s it won was for Best Orchestration and the other was for Best Original Score. Into The Light Into The Light musical wasn’t exactly a hit since it had a very short life consisting only of 13 previews and 6 performances at the Neil Simon Theater, although it had an interesting story were an American physicist gets obsessed to find out the truth behind the Shroud of Touring the problem was that it took a bit long to get from point A to point B. This story is close to reality because there actually was a whole team of scientists that performed a set of experiments on the Shroud of Turin in the late 1970’s, so it was refreshing that Michael Maurer tried bringing such unique topic to Broadway. I thought it would be interesting to mention a list of popular musicals for high school and middle school, a lot of young students are really passionate about starting to perform in musical theater and here are some great recommendations for popular school plays. Mamma Mia! Mamma Mia is a beloved musical not just by young audiences but of course for older public as well, the music used is very catchy since its mostly popular ABBA songs. It talks about a young woman (Sophie Sheridan) who is about to get married but since her dream is for her father to walk her down the aisle and she’s never met him, she finds her mother’s diary and invites the 3 man mentioned on the diary that could potentially be her father. Annie Another perfect choice for students to play since Annie it’s a story that has surpassed generations, because who hasn’t sang “tomorrow” at least once in a life time. This musical was actually based off a comic made by American cartoonist, Harold Gray. It is a story about a little girl who lives in an orphanage but decides to escape to try and find her parents, later she is actually adopted by Oliver Warbucks a billionaire who pledges to her that with his help they will one day find her parents. Want to watch Broadway shows online? No problem, there is actually a website where you can watch musicals online and they are all recorded in amazing definition. The website is www.broadwayhd.com. You can pay $8.99 for a month or $99.99 for a whole year, because not everyone has the time to go to Broadway or the West End regularly. [...] Read more...
